Westminster Castle
The "Pillar of Fire" & The Historic Homes that Surround It
Westminster, Colorado boasts a landmark that looks like it was plucked from a European fairytale. The 175-foot-tall red sandstone Westminster Castle (The "Pillar of Fire") is more than just a photo op—it is the anchor of one of the most interesting real estate pockets in the Front Range.
A Journey Back in Time
The story begins in 1892. Financier Denver S. Byers commissioned architect Stanford White to design a "Princeton of the West." Built with red sandstone from Red Rocks Park, the structure glows a fiery orange during sunset, earning its nickname.
Though it has served as a school, a sanitarium, and a university, it remains the crown jewel of the skyline. While you cannot tour the interior today, the grounds offer some of the best panoramic views of Downtown Denver and the Rockies.
The Best Views (Secret Photo Spots)
📸 Local's Tip:
For the best photo of the Castle with the mountains in the background, head to Westminster City Park at golden hour (one hour before sunset). The sandstone lights up, and the contrast with the blue mountains is unbeatable.
