The Art Walk on Santa Fe Drive That Isn't First Friday

  • August 20, 2026

Santa Fe Drive offers more than one way to experience its galleries.

First Friday on Santa Fe draws something close to 20,000 people a month, according to Uncover Colorado's coverage of the event, most of them packed into the walkable stretch between 5th and 11th Avenues where the bulk of the District's more than 100 galleries and studios sit. In August, the Art District closes Santa Fe Drive to traffic from 6th to 11th Avenues for what the District itself calls its biggest event of the year. That's a real party. It's also a lot of elbow-to-elbow shuffling if what you actually want is to look at the art, or talk to the person who made it.

The District also holds a quieter Third Friday event on the third Friday of the month. Third Fridays on Santa Fe offer another chance to visit galleries and talk with artists. Some galleries even shorten their hours for it. Access Gallery keeps its First Friday doors open 6 to 9 p.m., but on Third Friday it's 6 to 8. Colorado.com describes it plainly as Preview Night, the collector's alternative to the street party.

This month, that Third Friday lands on August 21. And the timing happens to line up with a genuinely good week to be walking Santa Fe Drive, whether you go for the quiet night or not.

What's actually on the walls right now

If you haven't been down to the District since early summer, several shows are either brand new, about to close, or worth timing your visit around.

In Good Company: D'art Gallery Celebrates 7 Years runs through August 23 at D'art Gallery, bringing together work from close to 80 artist members across the gallery's three affiliated groups, D'art Gallery, D'art 360, and D'art Satellite. It's the kind of anniversary show that won't repeat itself, since it's built around the specific roster of artists the gallery has accumulated over seven years, not a recurring theme.

Process Marks, a three-artist show from Tiffani Erdmanczyk, Ashton Lacy Jones, and Elissa Quist, runs through August 29. The work leans into material-first process, meaning the artists start with a substance or a gesture rather than a finished image in mind and let the piece find its shape from there.

Sequesterings opened August 6 at the Center for Visual Art, MSU Denver's off-campus gallery at 965 Santa Fe Drive, and runs all the way through October 24, so there's no rush on this one. Ten artists working in post-consumer and post-industrial plastic turn what would otherwise be waste into sculpture, built around a visit from featured artist Aurora Robson, whose practice is built specifically on transforming discarded plastic into forms that are simultaneously beautiful and pointedly unsettling. CVA is pairing the show with a public talk from Robson and an ongoing community workshop series called Crafty Action Society.

The Collective Spectacle and Exploration opened August 7 at Access Gallery, 910 Santa Fe Drive, and runs through September 5. The show pairs original artwork from ten recent high school graduates with disabilities who just completed the gallery's eight-week transition program with a companion body of interactive work built by five emerging Access Gallery artists during its Creative Careers internship. Access Gallery has the show up for both First Fridays that bookend its run, August 7 and September 4, plus a Third Friday meet-the-artists session on August 21.

Being on Earth, a two-artist show from Monica Hokeilin and Clare Scott, opens August 21 at SYNC Gallery, 931 Santa Fe Drive, and runs through September 13. That means Third Friday isn't just the quiet alternative to First Friday this month, it's also the actual opening night for one of the District's newer shows.

The week that's actually worth planning around

Line these up and August 2026 gives Santa Fe Drive a real rhythm, not just a single date to circle:

  • August 21: Third Fridays on Santa Fe. SYNC Gallery opens Being on Earth. Access Gallery hosts its Meet the Artists session for The Collective Spectacle and Exploration. D'art Gallery's anniversary show enters its final weekend.
  • August 23: In Good Company closes at D'art Gallery.
  • August 29: Process Marks closes.
  • August 30: Sundays on Santa Fe, the last-Sunday-of-the-month gallery crawl, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the most family-friendly version of the walk with none of the evening crowd.

That gives you four dates to plan around before Labor Day, and only one of them is a Friday night gallery event. The other dates offer gallery events, chances to meet artists, and shows to plan around.

Two ways to experience the galleries

The District offers two gallery-night formats. A gallery only has so much wall space and so much of the artist's evening. When 20,000 people spread across a hundred-plus spaces on First Friday, the average visitor gets a few minutes per gallery at best, more often just a glance through the door. Third Friday draws a fraction of that, which means the ratio of people to artwork, and people to artists, tips back in favor of an actual look. Choosing between them depends on whether you want a busier evening or a quieter chance to spend time with the work.

That distinction is worth knowing if you live here: not which night has the bigger turnout, but which night matches what you're actually trying to do on a Friday evening in your own part of town.
